L’Équipe has reported that Paris Saint-Germain could look to integrate Xavi Simons (20) into the team following the conclusion of his loan with RB Leipzig.
Simons had first joined the French side when he was 16 years but had struggled to find playing time in Paris, with the likes of Neymar Jr. (32) standing in the way of his development.
This led PSG to sell the precocious talent to PSV at the start of last season, and it was in the Dutch league that the talented young player took the step that had long been expected of him. Simons made 48 appearances across all competitions, scoring 22 and assisting 12 times.
Xavi Simons’s future at PSG defined by a buyback clause
It was at this point that PSG triggered their buyback clause, and looked to take advantage of the winger’s breakout season by selling him for €50 million. However, according to Hadrien Grenier were frustrated by the terms of their own agreement, as they realised that there was a clause that would see the Dutch club receive the transfer fee if the player was sold before 2025.
Leipzig are keen to extend his loan further, but with the departure of Kylian Mbappé imminent, PSG could finally turn to a talent that they have long harboured but rarely utilised. The unusual situation with PSV has unwittingly provided Les Parisiens with the means to use what they already own, as they seek an answer to replacing the irreplaceable.
