A local Bavarian news source has revealed how FC Bayern approached the 22-year-old talent and how the deal fell through.
According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, Florian Wirtz is believed to have respectfully declined the offer to join Bayern Munich.
Bayern’s belief is that Florian Wirtz rejected the move because he feared being involved in a ‘positional tussle’ with Jamal Musiala.
On the day of Bayern’s title celebration, there was a meeting between the Bavarian club’s hierarchy and Florian Wirtz in Munich.
Wirtz was collected at the airport and driven to a city hotel. Hoeneß, Rummenigge, Eberl, Freund, Dreesen, Kompany – Everyone was there to try to convince Wirtz.
The player first held a lengthy face-to-face tactical discussion with Vincent Kompany in a separate room.
He then met in the suite with Eberl, Freund, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Uli Hoeneß and Jan-Christian Dreesen – it was Bayern’s last attempt to lure Wirtz to Munich.
After these discussions, Wirtz left for vacation. He thought about his future for five days and in the end ‘politely rejected Bayern’s offer’.
Wirtz, the player, informed Kompany. Wirtz’s father Hans proceeded to call Eberl and Hoeneß to inform them of his decision.
The meeting went unnoticed because it took place on Sunday, May 18th – all cameras were focused on Marienplatz, where Bayern celebrated the title
