Emre Can lashed out at referee Danny Makkelie following Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League exit to Chelsea on Tuesday, claiming the ‘Black and Yellows’ lost because of him.
In particular, Can was unhappy with the decision to have Kai Havertz’s penalty retaken after Dortmund were adjudged to have interfered.
“We didn’t deserve to lose. We lost because of the referee,” Can fumed to Amazon Prime after the game.
“Giving back the penalty to be retaken like that, how is it possible? I don’t understand. The referee has been very bad today. They way he spoke to us was arrogant.”
Can’s teammate Jude Bellingham spoke in the same vein, describing the penalty replay as a “joke”.
“The fact that they had a replay is a joke. When you have a slow run like that, people are going to interfere. That’s the game, I guess, and he made a call,” said Bellingham.
