Following Belgium’s 3-0 victory over Sweden, Thibault Courtois made the decision to leave the squad and return to Madrid, report Marca.
As explained by the Belgian Federation, this is a precautionary measure to avoid further strain on an adductor issue. Courtois played the full 90 minutes against Sweden in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. His team will face Germany in a friendly before the end of the international break. Koen Casteels or Matz Sels are the two main options to start in goal.
Real Madrid will need Courtois at his best as they are facing a critical period in their season. In the coming weeks, they will face Barcelona in the return leg of the Copa del Rey and Chelsea in the Champions League, while trying to stay in second place in the league with Atlético getting ever closer.
To get through April in good shape, Los Blancos will need Courtois in peak condition. The Belgian has been one of the team’s standouts this season.
