Kylian Mbappé on France captaincy: “I’m not going to speak for the sake of it.”

Appearing before the press this afternoon before tomorrow’s match against Ireland, Kylian Mbappé notably discussed his new role as national team captain, explaining that being handed the armband did not change the way he played no the pitch.

His first game as skipper came on Friday night with a 4-0 win over a virus-stricken Dutch side, with the PSG man registering a brace as well as setting up his vice-captain Antoine Griezmann for the early opener. With the team 3-0 up at half-time, Mbappé gave a rousing half-time speech, urging his teammates to pick up where they left off after the break.

His remarks reported by RMC, the striker pointed out that Les Bleus’ performance spoke for itself:

“I was the same, I played my new role naturally. There wasn’t much to say with regard to the team’s performance. I’m not just going to speak for the sake of it.”

Asked about his potential role as a link between two generations of France players – the 2018 World Cup winners, and those who emerged in Qatar – Mbappé pointed out that the atmosphere in the squad was one of unison anyway:

“I was the link between two generations, but there weren’t any differences during the week. The team is in good spirits, I haven’t had to intervene. The less work I have, the better it is for everyone.”
