Manuel Neuer to wear ‘One Love’ armband at Qatar World Cup

Speaking at a press conference following Germany’s first training session in Qatar, captain Manuel Neuer has confirmed that he will be wearing the rainbow-coloured ‘One Love’ armband in support of LGBTQIA+ rights at the World Cup.

When questioned on the subject and asked if he would wear the armband against Japan on Wednesday, Neuer replied with a resounding “yes.”

On the eve of the World Cup, FIFA launched a new captain’s armband in partnership with three United Nations agencies on the eve of the tournament. Messages printed on the new armband include #SaveThePlanet, #ProtectChildren, #EducationForAll, #BeActive and #NoDiscrimination.

However, captains of nine countries partaking at the World Cup plan to wear the ‘One Love’ armband. England and Wales join Germany as three of the nations involved.

Ahead of the tournament, France’s Hugo Lloris has already spoke about the political context of the Qatar World Cup, reservedly suggesting that he’d respect the wishes of the host country Qatar and would like to keep his personal opinion out of the matter, and will therefore not wear a ‘One Love’ armband.
