Both Eastleigh and Scunthorpe have issued statements following the abandonment of their National League clash at 1-1 on Tuesday night after a shocking incident in stoppage time. The match at Silverlake Stadium saw Dec Howe put the visitors in front before Harvey Saunders equalised late on.
In the final moments, an accidental but alarming head clash occurred between Eastleigh’s defender Archie Harris, who is on loan from Premier League side Bournemouth, and Scunthorpe’s Jean Belehouan. The two were contesting a loose ball when they collided at high speed, falling to the ground simultaneously.
Medical staff and paramedics immediately attended to both players, with an ambulance called to the scene. Flags were raised around them as the crowd fell silent, anxiously watching the response. The referee then led both teams off the pitch before deciding to abandon the match, which was being shown live on DAZN as part of the National League coverage. Updates on the players’ conditions have since been released by both clubs.
Eastleigh & Scunthorpe Issue Updates After Horror Incident
Having been transferred onto a wheelchair and taken from the pitch, Scunthorpe confirmed a positive update on Belehouan after manager Andy Butler told BBC Radio Humberside he had a “slightly numb face” and was in a “bit of shock from the impact.” On X, the club wrote (see post below):
“Jean Belehouan has returned to the dressing room following treatment and will continue to be assessed and monitored. At this stage, JB appears to be responding well to testing. As soon as there are any other updates we will update.”
In addition, Eastleigh announced that 20-year-old Harris, on loan from Bournemouth, was conscious and communicating while at hospital. The club wrote (see their post below):
“Archie Harris has now been discharged from hospital following a CT scan and several other tests which have come back as all clear. As advised by doctors, Archie will have 48 hours of complete rest before following the concussion guidelines. We are all fully behind Archie during his recovery.”
Messages of supporters from clubs around the league flooded in for both players as they look for a speedy recovery and a safe return to action. “Probably one of the scariest things I’ve seen as a spectator,” one X user commented, “you could tell it was a bad one by the way the bench jumped out and how the stadium went dead silent. Thoughts and prayers with Archie and his family.”
Another user added: “Great to hear. From what it looked like, it seemed extremely concerning, but that is a large positive.” Elsewhere, a third remarked: “Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for both players involved. This exceeds any rivalries,” as a fourth also said: “Here’s hoping that both players make a swift and full recovery. Never good to see that.”
Though the game was beyond the 90th minute, it remains to be seen whether the fixture will be replayed entirely given the busy schedule. Scunthorpe are currently fifth in the league with 12 points, with Eastleigh in eighth spot on 10 points.
