Aston Villa will escape punishment for playing the Champions League music in an embarrassing blunder on Tuesday night, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.
Officials from UEFA have quizzed the club over their failure to play the iconic anthem ahead of their quarter-final second-leg defeat against Paris Saint-Germain last night.
And they are satisfied that it was a genuine oversight and are set to take no further action.
Villa’s explanation for the blunder was that a computer system with the correct music files crashed as the teams were preparing to walk out of the tunnel at Villa Park.
The only one available to them was the Europa League theme, which was used as John McGinn and Marquinhos led the two teams onto the pitch.
The Brazilian defender actually exchanged quizzical glances with his team-mate Pacho when the teams lined up alongside each other as the music was playing.
Finally, the Champions League tune eventually reverberated around an expectant Villa Park before kick-off, but the moment had been lost.
UEFA have accepted Villa’s version of events and will not be opening any internal investigation on the back of what they accept was a genuine error.
Aston Villa Set for ‘Ambitious’ Summer Despite UCL Exit
Romano has issued a transfer update
In his latest GIVEMESPORT newsletter, senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Aston Villa will look to be ‘ambitious’ in the summer transfer window despite their Champions League quarter-final exit on Tuesday.
While Unai Emery’s men now won’t qualify for the Champions Leeague next season by winning the competition outright themselves, they can still secure a spot in the Premier League.
Villa currently sit in seventh position in the English top flight, although they are only three points behind third-placed Nottingham Forest in an exciting end-of-season race for European football.
Where the Midlands outfit finish could determine whether they can sign Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio on permanent deals from Manchester United and PSG respectively this summer, with both players impressing in a claret and blue shirt following loan moves in the January transfer window.
