Michael Carrick’s Job to Lose Amid No Outstanding Candidate

Manchester United look a completely different side under Michael Carrick, and journalist Samuel Luckhurst has hinted that he could get the job full-time, with no outstanding external candidate.

United secured their fifth win out of six under Carrick on Monday night, with the Red Devils unbeaten during his short tenure. There’s no doubt Carrick is giving INEOS something to think about when it comes to their next manager, but there is still a lot of football to play this season.

United have made plenty of mistakes when it comes to hiring managers since Sir Alex Ferguson, so it’s no surprise that they wanted to bring in Carrick on an interim basis and take their time with a permanent decision.

If United’s form continues, then there’s no doubt Carrick will come under consideration.

It’s Carrick’s Job to Lose at Man Utd

Speaking on X after the win over Everton, journalist Luckhurst has dropped an interesting claim on Carrick. The respected reporter suggests that it could now be Carrick’s job to lose, with there being no outstanding external candidate as it stands.

It seems United’s options for a permanent manager may be dwindling. Reports suggested that Thomas Tuchel could be an option, but their chances of securing him have been dented after he signed a new deal with England.

Carrick may become a serious candidate by default, but he’s certainly deserving of a chance if his opening six games are anything to go by.

It’s a temporary blow for Man Utd.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick celebrates after the match

Whoever is going to be in charge of Manchester United heading into the 2026/2027 season is going to want to be managing the club after qualifying for the Champions League.

If the Red Devils want to attract a higher profile of player, then playing in Europe’s elite club competition will be imperative.

United’s recruitment has been impressive this season, with the likes of Senne Lammens, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Bryan Mbeumo all impressing, but we could see them shop in more of an elite market if they qualify for the Champions League this season.

It’s a huge decision incoming for United, and it’s incredibly important they get it right.
