£99k-a-week star’s signing ‘will happen’ at Goodison Park – GiveMeSport

Everton’s proposed move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye ‘will happen’ according to multiple sources, says journalist Simon Phillips.

The 32-year-old appears to be closing in on a return to Goodison Park three years after he departed in a £30 million move to French giants PSG in search of silverware and Champions League football.

What is the latest news involving Gueye?

A recent report from The Guardian has revealed that Gueye has travelled to Merseyside for a medical in anticipation of completing a deal as Everton negotiate the final details.

The Senegal international has been made available for transfer after being deemed surplus to requirements by new manager Christophe Galtier.

Vitinha’s arrival from FC Porto has forced Gueye down the PSG pecking order and the Parisians appear eager to offload his £99,000-per-week wages as soon as possible.

It’s claimed that Everton manager Frank Lampard is eyeing a short-term deal for the tough-tackling engine room operator, who it’s hoped will ease the club’s relegation fears.

What has Phillips said about Gueye?

Phillips believes that Gueye will be a ‘really good signing’ for Everton and that Lampard had targeted the midfielder area ‘as a priority’ ahead of the upcoming campaign.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “The general consensus is now that multiple sources are saying that will happen.

“I think that’s a good move. He knows Everton, he knows the staff there, he knows the stadium, he knows the area; over 100 appearances for Everton previously.

“So, I think bringing him back into the midfield, which is what Lampard really wants as a priority, he wants midfielders, so I think that’d be a really good signing.”

Would Gueye be a good signing?

Gueye sparked controversy at the end of last season after he reportedly refused to play in a match to avoid wearing a rainbow symbol in support of LGBTQ+ rights.

It’s certainly questionable how Everton fans might feel about the midfielder’s actions, but on the pitch, there is little doubting his ability.

As per FBref, Gueye has ranked in the 98th percentile for pass competition, 94th for pressures and 93rd for tackles amongst his positional peers over the last year.

Gueye could provide the perfect balance alongside the likes of Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dele Alli in Everton’s midfield, giving Lampard’s charges a solid base to attack from.
