Borussia Dortmund CEO hints at the arrival of a new striker due to Sebastien Haller’s indefinite absence

Borussia Dortmund chief executive officer Hans-Joachim Watzke has suggested that the club will be in the market for a new forward to cope with the absence of Sebastien Haller.

Following the departure of Erling Haaland to Manchester City, Haller moved to the Signal Iduna Park for €31 million after an impressive spell with Ajax where he netted 47 times in 66 games across all competitions for the Eredivisie champions.

However, the Ivorian was diagnosed with testicular cancer last month. Haller has undergone surgery and is also expected to have chemotherapy after recent tests revealed the tumour to be malignant.

The 28-year-old is likely to be out until the end of this year at the very least. Dortmund may now look to acquire the services of another marksman despite the arrival of Karim Adeyemi from Red Bull Salzburg.

“Obviously it is clear that his [Haller’s] absence will be relatively long and to put everything on Youssoufa Moukoko’s shoulders now – he is 17 and would be a bit too much,” the BVB CEO told ARD’s Sportschau programme (h/t SuperSport).

“So I think that we will be doing something on the personnel level. Although a right solution is also difficult because the market offers are not ample.

“Ideally something should happen in the next eight to 10 days,”

Following his exit from Torino, Andrea Belotti would be a shrewd addition to Dortmund due to his pace and adept finishing ability.

Luis Suarez would have also been a fair shout but the Uruguayan recently returned to his boyhood club Nacional after turning down the chance to sign for River Plate.

With their 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign set to kick off with a clash against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, Edin Terzic’s men will be keen to properly reinforce their squad as they look to put an end to Bayern Munich’s unrivalled dominance of German football.
