Yann Sommer is set to leave Bayern Munich

Kicker are reporting that Yann Sommer is set to leave Bayern Munich in the summer, just six months into his spell in Bavaria.

The Swiss international goalkeeper was signed from Borussia Mönchengladbach in the January transfer window for a fee of €8m, as a direct replacement for the injured Manuel Neuer. The 34-year-old would see his contract expire in the summer of 2025.

However, it is “certain” that Sommer will depart Die Rekordmeister with Neuer returning from injury earlier than expected. With Alexander Nübel also returning to Munich when his loan spell with AS Monaco ends, the Monégasques are one of the European keen on luring Sommer away from the Allianz Arena.

Sommer has featured 24 times for Bayern in all competitions this season where he has earned eight clean sheets, with a save percentage of 68.9%. Nevertheless, he has not been a direct replacement for Neuer with the Bayern Munich captain producing a significantly greater save percentage of 80.4% from his 16 appearances prior to the World Cup. 

The possible destinations for Sommer appear to be outside of Germany with Valencia, Villarreal, and Leicester City joining Monaco on the list of clubs in need of a new number one.
