Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has given an injury update on Florian Wirtz after the youngster was forced off with an ankle problem in Die Werkself’s 3-1 DFB-Pokal round of 16 win over Paderborn on Wednesday night.
“It looks like Flo Wirtz has suffered a painful knock,” Xabi Alonso told reporters at the post-match press conference.
This puts Wirtz’s participation in Sunday’s Bundesliga clash with VfB Stuttgart in doubt.
“We want to be optimistic, but I can’t say if it will be enough for Sunday,” said Xabi Alonso.
Wirtz has been a key player for Leverkusen this season, scoring six goals and providing 10 assists in 20 appearances.
