World Cup Preview | Spain vs Germany: Joshua Kimmich & Co. face difficult game

Hansi Flick will expect a response from his Germany players following their defeat against Japan in their World Cup opener but they face a Spain side that put seven past Costa Rica on Wednesday.

The areas of improvement are apparent in the Germany camp. Defensively they were poor against Japan and will need to play a lot better if they’re to keep out Spain’s impressive attacking players. Additionally, you feel Jamal Musiala has to stay on the pitch. He was his side’s creative outlet in the first game and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. However, when he came off, Germany struggled.

The key to success could lie at the feet of the 19-year-old. This leads to the final point – substitutions. Flick was criticised for the timing of his subs against Japan which ultimately cost them the game alongside albeit poor defending. 

Team News 

Leroy Sané was missing through injury in the first game for Germany but has since returned to training. However, it remains unclear whether the winger will be fit enough for a spot in the squad on Sunday. Flick may not make too many changes but speaking in his pre-match press conference, it appears that a three-man midfield could be an option for Die Mannschaft. There could also be a change in attack.

Kai Havertz played as a striker against Japan but didn’t do enough to trouble the Japanese defence. Flick may opt for a more out-and-out forward, such as Niclas Füllkrug or Youssoufa Moukoko. 

For Spain, expect an unchanged eleven from the side that hammered Costa Rica 7-0 in their Group E opener. With a mix of experience and youth with players such as Sergio Busquets and Gavi, Spain have a good balance throughout the whole team.
