Wolves set to make official approach for Rob Edwards after Gary O’Neil pulls out of running

Rob Edwards is now the front runner to become new head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to The Telegraph, Wolves are set to make an official approach to Middlesbrough for the 42-year-old.

The Old Gold dismissed Vitor Pereira last week after failing to win any of their 10 Premier League games this season.

They were in advanced negotiations with Gary O’Neil to return to the Midlands for a second spell. But the English boss had a change of heart and decided to pull out of the managerial race.

Edwards is now their number one target to replace Pereira, but Middlesbrough are reluctant to lose their manager.

The former Luton Town boss joined Boro in the summer and has made an impressive start to life in North Yorkshire.

His team currently sit third in the Championship table after recording 26 points from 14 matches.

Edwards, who has previously worked as a coach at Wolves’ academy, is highly regarded by the Molineux hierarchy and, in particular, executive chairman Jeff Shi.

But it remains to be seen whether the 42-year-old would be willing to join the Premier League club when he is already doing so well in his current role.

Wolves may also have to pay compensation to Middlesbrough if they manage to persuade Edwards to join them.

The Midlands side face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend, with caretakers James Collins and Richard Walker expected to be in charge of the team.
