Wolves now ‘expecting’ new striker signing at Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers now expect to sign a striker before the summer window slams shut at Molineux with Goncalo Guedes unlikely to be permanently used in the role, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Bruno Lage has overseen a busy few months in the West Midlands but can still add to his side ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What is the latest Wolves transfer news?

According to talkSPORT, Wolves are competing with Southampton and Newcastle for the signing of highly-rated Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos.

The report states that the Portuguese giants currently value Ramos at £25 million. If Wolves were to match that asking price, it would take their summer spending past the £130 million mark.

However, ahead of their clash with Tottenham on Saturday, Lage insisted that there had been no contact with the 21-year-old.

He said: “We’re still looking for a striker. In the last few days I have received so many messages about him (Ramos). I haven’t talked with him and we didn’t make any offer for him.”

Earlier this month, Lage also said that new signing Guedes could play as a striker if called upon and partnered Daniel Podence in a front two on Saturday.

Meanwhile, centre-back Willy Boly has become the subject of transfer interest from Nottingham Forest, with The Athletic reporting that a £1 million bid has been rejected.

What has Jones said on the striker hunt?

Jones understands that the suggestions that Guedes will play as a centre-forward this season are wide of the mark.

The transfer insider says Wolves are continuing to look for a new striker and expect to sign one before the window shuts.

When asked about the possibility of Guedes playing as a striker, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “A few people seem to think that is a possibility but my information on this is that Wolves are still trying for a centre forward for sure. My source there says they definitely want one and to expect an arrival.”

Why are Wolves looking for a new striker?

Raul Jimenez has been the main man at Molineux since his arrival in the summer of 2018, but the 29-year-old only made his return from an injury in pre-season on Saturday.

With Fabio Silva joining Anderlecht on loan for the season, Lage has been left short of specialist strikers.

Guedes is capable of playing that role but has predominantly competed from the left-wing throughout his career.

There is therefore a need for some striking quality. In three Premier League games this season, Wolves have found the net just once, leaving them hovering just about the relegation zone.
