Wolfsburg have confirmed major adductor surgery for starting centre-back Denis Vavro. The Slovakian succumbed to injury ten minutes into his Bundesliga club’s 0-9 away victory against SV Hemelingen in the opening round of the DFB Pokal on Saturday. Vavro was replaced by German central defender Moritz Jenz, who ended up scoring the match’s opening goal three minutes later.
Vavro’s injury certainly throws a wrench into Wolfsburg’s personnel plans for the season. The 29-year-old was a projected starter in head coach Paul Simonis’ XI. Working on loan from FC Copenhagen last year, Vavro did serve as a regular under former VfL head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl. Wolfsburg ended up purchasing him from the Danish outfit permanently for €2m.
Presumably, Vavro’s injury opens the door for Jenz. The German centre-back has nevertheless been linked with a move away from the die Wölfe and Kicker claims that Jenz wishes to leave the club. Jenz declined to conduct post-match interviews after the cup match. It may actually be promising homegrown talent David Odogu who ends up benefitting from the Vavro injury.
Odogu did not make the Pokal matchday selection over the weekend for reasons which were not specified. The 19-year-old made his Bundesliga debut in a matchday 28 loss against Union Berlin last April. Afterwards, the youngster conducted an interview with Get German Football News’ Oscar O’Mara.
