One of the best coaches in basketball, Dawn Staley, has made her feelings clear in the latest drama regarding the ongoing rivalry that elite players Angel Reese and Caitlyn Clark share.
The competitiveness and conflict between the two was raised earlier in the WNBA season when Reese’s Chicago Sky took on Calrk’s Indiana Fever, with the latter romping to a 93-58 win — as they dominated every quarter. During the match, there was one foul Clark committed on Reese that got the league, the franchises, and each set of fans talking. Now Staley has had her say.

College basketball coach says the rivalry is great for the WNBA
Speaking on The Breakfast Club this week, Staley had her say — and her comments were on point.
“I think [the rivalry] is great for our game … it’s a sport, treat us like a sport… it happens in every sport, soccer, basketball, football… so let it be.”
On the talking point regarding the foul, Staley — who is the head coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team, and a former six-time WNBA All-Star as a pro — said: “I’m going to take the lead of Angel and Caitlin. And that lead is they said it was a foul, the officials got it right and we’re moving on. I’m going to take their lead.”
Clark and Reese have been natural rivals since their college days. It began in 2023 when Reese’s LSU Tigers beat Clark’s team, the Iowa Hawkeyes. It escalated when Reese taunted Clark, in footage that went viral. However, Clark got the last laugh at college when their teams once again faced off, albeit this time in the Elite Eight of March Madness, with Clark scoring 41 points and tallying 12 assists to help Iowa to a win over LSU. More than 12 million people watched the game.
That rivalry followed both players into their rookie seasons last year with their pro teams. And Staley believes it’s nothing but good for the game, as it has attracted even more eyeballs to each player, their franchise, Sky and Fever, and the WNBA has a whole.
“I’m looking forward to the next time they play, too,” Staley said. “I’m going to be glued in just like everybody else.”
