William Scull Bizarrely Claims he Actually Beat Canelo Alvarez

On Saturday the 3rd of May, Canelo Alvarez defeated William Scull via unanimous decision in his 67th professional boxing bout. Although the Mexican superstar added another win to his record, he did it in very uneventful fashion, and throughout the entire 12 rounds, just 445 punches were thrown between Canelo and Scull. All three of the judges who were tasked with scoring the fight scored it in the Mexican’s favour, producing scores of 115-113, 116-112 and 119-109.

Although all three judges scored the fight in favour of Canelo, the Cuban, Scull, is adamant that he won the fight, and has particularly pointed towards the statistic of punches thrown as to why he should’ve had his hand raised on Saturday night. Scull spoke to FightHubTV just hours after the fight, and was frustrated that the fight wasn’t given his way, as he felt like he had the win secured.

William Scull Is Adamant he Defeated Canelo Alvarez

Canelo defeated the Cuban via unanimous decision in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night

On Saturday, Canelo Alvarez and William Scull competed in one of the most uneventful boxing matches of 2025 so far. The big fight, which took place in Saudi Arabia, unfortunately broke an unwanted record. According to Compubox, “By throwing a combined 445 punches over 12 rounds, Canelo (152 punches) and Scull (293 punches) set a new record for fewest punches thrown in a 12-round fight tracked by CompuBox’s 40-year history.”

Despite the limited action throughout the 12 rounds, Scull believes he has been hard done by, and during an interview with FightHubTV after the fight, the Cuban expressed his belief that he won the fight and in the later rounds wasn’t throwing much due to wanting to play it safe.

“Yes, I totally felt like I had won. After the fifth round, I was already winning the fight. That’s why I kept up the work I was doing, because honestly, if he’s not hitting me, why would I risk it?”

As mentioned, in terms of punches thrown, the numbers were very poor from Canelo and Scull. However, the Cuban has pointed towards his higher activity and punches thrown as to why he felt he should’ve been awarded the victory.

“Canelo deserves my respect, but he threw less than me, and was less effective than me. The Cuban principle is like that: hit and don’t let them hit you. Everyone knows our school of thought.”

There is an argument when scoring the fight that Scull could’ve won three to four, maybe even at a push, five rounds, however, the rounds which Canelo won were a lot clearer and not many people around the world who tuned in to watch the fight would’ve scored the fight in favour of the Cuban who on Saturday lost his undefeated record.
