Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s plan for the year continues with a September super-fight against fellow pound-for-pound boxing great Terence Crawford in Las Vegas, following the Mexican’s listless win over William Scull at a Riyadh Season-branded event in Saudi Arabia.
Not everyone is pleased Canelo is fighting Crawford, even though it pits two wildly-accomplished fighters together, who are both known amongst casual audiences. The former multi-weight champion boxer Amir Khan, who fought Canelo himself, but lost by vicious knockout, is one vocal critic.
Khan was full of praise for Canelo but likened the fighter’s movements of late to a cash grab.

Khan blasts the Canelo vs Crawford fight as “an easy way out”
Immediately after beating Scull over 12 rounds at the Anb Arena in Saudi, to retain three world titles, as well as Ring Magazine’s belt, while adding Scull’s IBF championship, Canelo squared off with his next opponent, Crawford.
Khan was full of praise initially for Canelo, but balanced his comments with a criticism over his recent choice in opponents.
“Canelo is a very dangerous fight for Crawford — you’re only one punch away from getting hurt,” Khan said, to FastSlots. “Canelo’s power is always going to be there. Crawford has earned good money, he has a beautiful family. Why risk it? You’re only one punch away from getting hurt, and he doesn’t really need the money or the fame.
“He’s pound for pound the best fighter in the world,” Khan said.
“I was never the same fighter again after facing Canelo. You can get knocked down, fine, you can get back up again, but the knockout Canelo gave me, it probably took five years off my life.”
“I was at the peak of my career and never came back as the same fighter again.”
On how he changed after fighting, and losing to, Canelo, Khan said: “I wasn’t gun-shy or scared, but that one shot, it wasn’t good for the body or the mind. And it changed my opponent’s strategy for fighting me as they all started to try to land that one big shot.”
“I don’t think Crawford and Canelo needs to happen.”
He continued: “Canelo fighting these smaller guys — he fought me and a lot of other smaller guys — he needs to fight someone his own weight. He’s looking for an easy way out because he’s not going to get hit or hurt by anybody.
“And it will hurt Crawford more if he loses against Canelo because he’s an unbeaten fighter. He doesn’t really need to take this fight to prove anything, he’s proven himself time and time again.”
