West Ham now readying ‘improved offer’ for 146-goal star at London Stadium

West Ham United could be set to ‘make an improved offer’ for Club Brugge attacking midfielder Hans Vanaken, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Hammers have seen an opening bid for the 29-year-old rejected by the Belgian giants but may now be plotting a new approach following their disappointing start to the season.

What is the latest news involving Vanaken?

Sky Sports recently revealed live on air that Club Brugge have turned down an offer worth €10 million (£8.4m) for the experienced campaigner, yet Vanaken has publicly expressed his desire to join West Ham.

“This may be my last chance to play abroad one day, and I want to take it. A lot has already been written about it. It’s no longer a surprise,” he said in an interview with RTBF.

“I’ve thought about it. The club in question, West Ham, is interested, and so am I. Discussions with Club Brugge will begin on Monday. We’ll see where that takes us!”

Vanaken still has three years remaining on his contract at the Jan Breydel Stadium, and David Moyes’ charges may have to up their offer significantly if they want to secure his services.

West Ham missed out on Jesse Lingard’s signature to Nottingham Forest earlier in the summer and will surely be determined to land their target this time around.

What has Jones said about Vanaken?

The east London outfit have lost their opening three Premier League games of the season, highlighting the need for further reinforcements ahead of deadline day.

And Jones has informed GiveMeSport that ‘talks are ongoing’ for Vanaken at the London Stadium as it is considered an ‘important’ deal.

He said: “Vanaken is the one to really look out for, talks are ongoing, and there are indications from people at West Ham that it’s a deal considered important enough to make an improved offer now to satisfy Club Brugge.

Would Vanaken be a good signing?

Vanaken has been one of Club Brugge’s star players in recent years, registering 102 goals and 73 assists in 344 appearances, taking his career tally up to 146 strikes while claiming five league titles and four Belgian Super Cups along the way.

As per FBref, the 6 foot 5 colossus has also ranked in the 99th percentile for aerial duels won, 98th for progressive passes, 94th for interceptions, 87th for clearances, and 85th for non-penalty expected goals amongst his positional peers over the last year.

West Ham could improve their options in the final third of the pitch by signing Vanaken, therefore, and Moyes will surely be hoping that the club’s hierarchy can get this transfer over the line.
