Romano Schmid (25) could be the latest key player to leave Werder Bremen before Monday’s deadline. Sky Germany report that talks regarding the player’s departure are ongoing with West Ham United and Lille monitoring the Austrian’s situation.
West Ham’s interest in Schmid was first noted in July but reports have now resurfaced ahead of the September 1 deadline. Fellow Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Fulham had also shown interest in Schmid but nothing came to fruition. It’s also worth noting that Schmid is advised by CAA Base, a London based agency, after switching.
With two years remaining on his current deal, Werder Bremen hold all the cards when it comes to discussing Schmid’s departure, and they will be reluctant to allow another star player to leave after Marvin Ducksch while Mitchell Weiser suffered a torn cruciate ligament and will miss much of the campaign. Schmid is also valued €17m by Transfermarkt.
