Speaking with Sky Germany ahead of kickoff in this evening’s Pokal fixture against Wolfsburg, 1. FC Union Berlin managing director Oliver Ruhnert has issued his first words on the sensational collapse of Spanish midfielder Isco to his club.

After the sensational collapse of the deal that would have seen famous Spanish midfielder Isco come to Germany, 1. FC Union Berlin managing director Oliver Ruhnert has spoken on the failed transfer to the German media for the first time. Interviewed on the sidelines ahead of kickoff in this evening’s round-of-16 DFB Pokal tie against Wolfsburg, Ruhnert confirmed that the player’s representatives had tried to change the conditions of the deal after the medical.
“Everything should be discussed and cleared before a medical,” Ruhnert told his interviewer, “All things were clear for us. Then changes to the contract were requested again.”
“After the changes were requested, we said ‘It’s not possible like this,'” the club manager continued, “Then it was clear for us to say – even if the player is already there – that we won’t get involved in doing any things that don’t suit us.”
“We’ve never had that problem before,” Ruhnert admitted “In the end, after all, the player has to decide. He had probably had different assumptions.”
Ruhnert surprised many Bundesliga watchers by putting together a very active window for the Bundesliga’s current second-placed-side. After tempering expectations at the beginning of the window, the FCU chief personnel executive proceeded to purchase Jerome Roussillon, Josip Juranovic, and Aïssa Laidouni for a combined total that surely exceeded €15 million.
As a “nouveau-riche” Bundesliga side, Union can still manage to keep the financial details associated with their transfers a secret from a ravenous press for the time being. Such a headline story may change that quickly as more details are sure to leak out in the coming days.
“That is the reason why we never announce contracts until they are signed,” Ruhnert was sure to emphasize in his interview.
