Wayne Rooney Claims Surprise English Club Have Most ‘Horrible’ Fans

Wayne Rooney played for Manchester United, Everton, Derby County and D.C. United in an enviable career – and, as a result, the former sharpshooter has had the pleasure of playing in front of millions of fans from all corners of the globe.

Not only is Rooney widely regarded as one of the best strikers in football history but, his goalscoring record and throng of both collective and individual awards aside, he was a really technically proficient player able to perfect all aspects of the game.

An Everton academy graduate, Sir Alex Ferguson and his entourage were quick to pounce on the roaring youngster’s goalscoring exploits in the summer of 2004 – and the rest, well, is history given the career he carved out at Old Trafford.

Rooney Names Surprise Club with ‘Horrible’ Fans

It’s neither Liverpool nor Manchester City

Throughout his career in Stretford, Rooney plundered a club-record 253 strikes and received plenty of abuse from opposition fans. The respective fans of Liverpool and Manchester City, for obvious reasons, weren’t the biggest fans of the line-leader.

And while he was admired and loved in equal measure by the Old Trafford faithful, he recently revealed – in an episode of The Overlap – which set of fans had a knack of being ‘horrible’. Spoiler alert: it’s not a team from England’s top flight. He said:

“Mine, do you know who [had horrible fans]? As a player, the horrible fans were Blackpool. Honestly, we played Blackpool away a few times.”

The former 120-cap, 53-goal England international’s answer elicited a laugh from Jamie Carragher, who also chimed in to remind people that his Liverpool side lost twice in the 2010/11 Premier League campaign. “We [Liverpool] got beat by them two times in the same season in the Roy Hodgson years.”

Liverpool-born Rooney – one of Manchester United’s greatest players of all time – faced now-League One outfit Blackpool on two occasions, first in January 2011 and then four months later on May 22, 2011. Perhaps as expected, he won both times.

Rooney was plying his trade for Manchester United on both occasions. Stationed on the left wing, he played 66 minutes of their first encounter – a 3-2 win – and replaced Nemanja Vidic with six minutes left to play in their second meeting, which ended 4-2 in favour of the Red Devils.

Interestingly, since turning his hand to management, Rooney has been complimentary of the Bloomfield Road faithful after they clapped his already-relegated Derby County side off the pitch after the final game of the 2021/22 season.

Per the Blackpool Gazette, the striker-turned-tactician appreciated their support: “We’re proud of the support [they] gave us, and I’d like to say thank you to the Blackpool fans as well for clapping the lads off at the end. It shows you the work they’ve done this season and how infectious that can be throughout the world of football.”
