Serie A giants Napoli have sacked Walter Mazzarri, who had hoped to manage against Barcelona while having Victor Osimhen in the squad.
Osimhen was missing from the squad against Genoa in the 1-1 draw against Rossoblu and the result proved to be disastarous for Mazzarri, who has now been axed. Francesco Calzona has now taken his place, joining the Partenopei on a six-month deal till the end of the season and he has previously worked with Luciano Spalletti and Maurizio Sarri.
La Repubblica have added details to Mazzarri’s exit (via CN24) and they state that the Italian wanted one last chance to prove himself. He was optimistic about Osimhen’s return to action and someone from his entourage revealed some of his last words as Napoli manager.
Mazzarri told: “I was hoping to manage against Barcelona with Victor Osimhen on the pitch.”
It seems as if Mazzarri was confident about getting a result against the Catalans but it is Calzona who will undertake training today, as he shares his role as Slovakia boss with the Partenopei.
