Viktor Gyokeres Interview After Arsenal 4-0 Atletico Goes Viral

Viktor Gyokeres gave a brilliant interview following what was arguably an even more impressive performance, as Arsenal cruised to a 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Much has been made of the form – or lack thereof – of the Swedish striker, but he scored twice from just three shots under the lights at the Emirates Stadium.

Signed for £63.5 million from Sporting over the summer, the Gunners’ hierarchy had every hope that the 27-year-old would become the out-and-out goalscorer Mikel Arteta’s side have been missing, having finished as Premier League runners-up for three consecutive seasons. While last night’s display takes his tally to five goals in 12 appearances, it was the first time viewers truly saw just how good Gyokeres can be.

As a result of his performance, he earned Man of the Match and was interviewed on CBS Sports Golazo, primarily by Micah Richards – though Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher, back in the studio, couldn’t help but chime in from time to time. The exchange makes for fascinating viewing, as the Sweden international discussed his ambitions, the significance of wearing the number 14 shirt, and, in classic CBS fashion, revealed which of the three pundits is his favourite.

Henry, Arsenal’s greatest-ever player, was quick to move past Gyokeres’ midweek performance and ask what really matters: what would a good season look like – both for him individually and for Arsenal as a team? The answer was simple, as the 27-year-old immediately spoke about his desire for silverware.

“First and foremost, of course, we want to win trophies,” he said. “That’s our desire, and, of course, that’s the most important [thing]. I want to contribute with goals and improve my game also.” Watch the full interview below:

When Henry quipped about his hopes that his former side would win the Premier League and Champions League double, Gyokeres replied: “Yeah, that would work with me.” Then, when the conversation turned to the responsibilities that come with wearing the No.14 shirt, he said to Carragher:

“It feels great to be honest. There’s a lot of goals in that shirt and a lot of goals to come, so it feels amazing. To be honest, there weren’t many shirt numbers available [when I joined the club], but when I saw that [14] available, it was a big honour to take it, and unfortunately, I didn’t have Thierry’s number to ask him if I could take it.”

Gyokeres Put Micah Richards in his Place After Final Question

The CBS Sports Golazo studio, which also features Kate Scott (formerly Abdo), always likes to put a comedic slant on its coverage, and the age-old question that keeps popping up among the beloved quartet is over which pundit the interviewee likes the most.

When Richards put that question to Gyokeres, pleading under his breath for it not to be the usual answer of Thierry Henry, he replied:

“Yeah, obviously, I feel a little bit sorry for you, because you got benched from the studio.”

His comments referred to the fact Richards had been replaced on the panel by Clint Dempsey as he took up a role as a reporter in north London. But the laughter that ensued from Carragher meant that the question was left more than less unanswered, though it could be suggested that he wasn’t going to say the former Manchester City defender was his favourite.
