VfB Stuttgart goalkeeper Dennis Seimen enjoyed an emotional Bundesliga debut on Saturday afternoon, keeping a clean sheet in his side’s 2-0 victory away at SC Paderborn. The 20-year-old admitted that tears flowed after the final whistle, describing the occasion as the most emotional experience of his career.
The circumstances could scarcely have been more fitting. Seimen spent last season on loan at Paderborn, playing a crucial role in helping the East Westphalian club secure promotion to Germany’s top flight. The Stuttgart academy product subsequently returned to his parent club this summer, ready to inherit the starting position from Alexander Nübel.
Unfortunately, Seimen’s preparations for his first Bundesliga campaign were derailed by a thigh tendon injury that sidelined him for approximately twelve weeks. Experienced deputy Fabian Bredlow performed admirably in his absence, raising legitimate questions about whether Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß might retain the veteran goalkeeper following the international break.
Nevertheless, as Get German Football News reported following Thursday’s pre-match press conference, Hoeneß remained unequivocal in his commitment to Seimen as Stuttgart’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Dennis Seimen: “These are stories that only football can write”
Speaking to Sky Germany after Saturday’s victory, Seimen struggled to contain his emotions when reflecting on the occasion.
“To be able to make my Bundesliga debut for the club whose youth teams I’ve worked my way through for years, and then to do so against the club I was loaned to last season,” Seimen explained. “These are stories that only football can write. I have to say, a few tears flowed after the full-time whistle.”
Speaking separately to DAZN, the Germany U21 international described the occasion as “the most emotional thing I’ve experienced in my career.”
The Paderborn supporters also contributed to the memorable afternoon. Despite representing the opposition, Seimen received an enthusiastic reception from the home crowd and was invited over to the supporters’ section following the final whistle.
“The stadium isn’t all that big, but the fans are still loud,” Seimen told Sky Germany. “I certainly noticed it and was absolutely delighted.”
“Of course,” Seimen replied when asked whether he had felt nervous. “I’m nervous before every game in my first season. That was the case here last season too. This time a little more so because it was for my VfB, where I’ve played for a very long time.”
Sebastian Hoeneß rewarded for placing faith in young goalkeeper
Seimen’s selection also represented a significant vote of confidence from Hoeneß. The Stuttgart trainer had designated the academy product his first-choice goalkeeper during preseason and elected to honour that commitment despite Bredlow’s impressive performances.
Seimen justified the decision with several important interventions against Paderborn, notably denying Santiago Castaneda in the 32nd minute and Raphael Obermair shortly before half-time. His Bundesliga debut was still not entirely flawless.
Two uncertain passes during buildup demonstrated that the youngster still has some adjustments to make at Germany’s highest level. Hoeneß has already indicated that Bredlow will continue receiving opportunities, even if Seimen remains the club’s designated number one.
For now, Seimen was content to savour an afternoon he will remember for years.
“I’m looking forward to the coming weeks and will take everything in and enjoy it,” the goalkeeper concluded. “But first, I’m going to enjoy this evening and my Bundesliga debut.”
