Union Berlin picked up their first ever Champions League point on Wednesday evening as they held Italian champions Napoli to a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Napoli’s Matteo Politano opened the scoring in the 39th minute but Datro Fofana opened his account for Union Berlin seven minutes after the break, securing a point for the Bundesliga side.
Union’s draw in Italy ends their run of 12 consecutive defeats across all competitions. But in what’s their first ever Champions League campaign, after finishing fourth last season, they’re unable to qualify for the knockout stages. They could yet though finish their group in third, thus qualifying for the Europa League knockout rounds.
But Union’s draw in Naples was perhaps overshadowed by the events beforehand. As reported via our colleagues at Get Italian Football News, Napoli and Union Berlin fans clashed. It resulted in ten Union Berlin fans being arrested.
