Rangers have been dealt another blow in their bid to appoint a new manager at Ibrox, with GIVEMESPORT sources revealing on Wednesday night that Danny Rohl has pulled out of the race.
Rangers have been on the hunt for a new permanent manager since sacking Russell Martin in early October, the ex-Southampton boss having endured a turgid stint at Ibrox that spanned just 123 days, making him the club’s shortest-ever reigning permanent manager.
For a time, it seemed that former manager Steven Gerrard would make a return to Glasgow, only for Gerrard to turn down the chance to return to Rangers. The former Liverpool midfielder guided Rangers to an unbeaten Premiership title in 2021, which remains their most-recent league triumph.
Danny Rohl, who has been out of work since departing Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, had been linked with taking the role, though it now appears that the German is no longer in contention.
Rohl Turns Down Chance to Become Rangers Boss
Rohl joined Sheffield Wednesday in late 2023, guiding them, almost unthinkably, to survival in the latter stages of the 2023/24 season. He kept the Owls in the Championship despite their ownership troubles, and Rohl has been described as both “unbelievable” and “amazing” for the work he did at Hillsborough.
Only in his mid-30s, Rohl has garnered a healthy body of experience in football, having worked as a coach for teams including Bayern Munich and Southampton before moving into senior management. The German’s accomplishments with Wednesday suggested that, on paper, he could have been a perfect hire for Rangers, who won just one of their seven league games under Martin’s management.
Whoever is to be the next Rangers manager will, no doubt, be expected to oversee a remarkable turnaround at Ibrox, as fans have become conditioned to their club competing for every major honour, at least domestically, that is available to them. With Rohl and Gerrard now out of the picture, though, it is unclear as to who the Glaswegians will turn to as they continue their search for a new manager.
