There’s a weakness in Tom Aspinall’s armory, and it’s something prospective opponent Jon Jones can exploit en route to a thumping win over his latest rival.

That’s according to the former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, who looked ahead to the long-rumored fight between the UFC’s heavyweight champion Jones, who ran amok in the light heavyweight ranks before winning back-to-back bouts at heavyweight, and Aspinall, who holds interim championship status at the UFC.

Jones fought more recently than Aspinall, dispatching Stipe Miocic with a brutal, third-round, spinning back kick to the body. As such, it’s unclear when he’ll be fit and ready to fight again — though, if the dream fight were to become a reality, there’s an available slot at the UFC 313 show in March, which could be suitable, together with International Fight Week in the summer.

One of the reasons why this fight has gathered so much pace of late is because it could be a passing-of-the-torch moment between the younger, rising heavyweight in Aspinall, who challenges the older master. However, Velasquez still believes that the veteran has more than enough left in the tank to nullify any of the younger heavyweight threats.

For Velasquez, there is one mistake in particular that Aspinall makes, and it is one which Jones is well-poised to take advantage of because of his extraordinary IQ.

“Everybody has a fight pattern and he has a fight pattern,” Velasquez said of Aspinall, when speaking to Ariel Helwani on Tuesday. “Some disguise it better than others.”

“Aspinall does have a pattern that’s somewhat easier to find, when he comes in and strikes,” Velasquez, who beat Antonio Nogueira, Brock Lesnar, and Junior dos Santos, said.

“Jon studies, man. He’s a master at this. He analyzes things and studies things over and over again.”

It’s because of that flaw, together with Jones’s fight IQ, which sees Jones successfully unify the heavyweight titles and become the undisputed champion, having swatted away another young and hungry challenger.

“I think just for that reason, he’s going to know what to do. I don’t think he beats Jon, no,” Velasquez finished.
