Tottenham now ‘interested’ in signing ‘explosive’ £42.5m star at Hotspur Way

Tottenham are interested in signing Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Antonio Conte is still hoping to add a no.10 to his squad and the Italy international is being linked with a move to the Premier League.

What’s the latest news involving Zaniolo?

According to Italian outlet Tuttosport, the north Londoners have entered the race for Zaniolo and are prepared to battle it out with Juventus for the 23-year-old’s signature.

The report states that with less than two years remaining on his contract in Rome, he would be available for £42.5m, which has prompted sporting director Fabio Paratici to contact the Serie A giants.

Spurs have already signed Ivan Perisic following his release from 2020-2021 top-flight champions Inter Milan, while Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence have also arrived at Hotspur Way in recent months.

Tottenham are yet to welcome a creative spark through the door, although Jones reckons Zaniolo, described by Roma legend Francesco Totti as ‘explosive‘, would be an ideal fit for Conte.

What did Jones say about Zaniolo?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I do think there’s something in the links, I do think he’s a player that Tottenham are interested in.

If you consider Conte’s setup and consider the type of player he’s been signing, I think Zaniolo would be a really good fit.”

How did Zaniolo perform last season?

Having missed the entire 2020-2021 campaign following a second ACL injury sustained while playing for his country, the midfielder would have been forgiven for needing time to rediscover his best form.

But Zaniolo returned from injury with a spring in his step and would end up producing the best of his four seasons in terms of attacking output as a Roma player.

Playing both out wide and behind the striker, Zaniolo scored eight goals and laid on nine assists to help Jose Mourinho’s side return to the top six and lift the inaugural Europa Conference League.

In fact, it was Zaniolo’s goal in the final against Feyenoord which secured Roma’s first major European trophy, part of eight goal contributions in 10 appearances in the continental competition.

With goals, assists and a winning mentality, it’s easy to see why Tottenham are targeting such a player, and even easier to work out why Jones believes Zaniolo would fit nicely into Conte’s plans.
