Tottenham Hotspur target Edmond Taposba set to stay at Bayer Leverkusen

As reported by Bild, Bayer Leverkusen have no interest in selling Edmond Tapsoba this summer.

The Burkina Faso international has most recently been linked with a move away from the Werkself, with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur initiating contact with the defender. However, Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes explained whether the 24-year-old would be sold this summer: “No, not under normal circumstances.

“With his quality, I would be surprised if there is no interest. There are always limits somewhere. But Eddy is a very important player, without a doubt one of the top players in our team,” continued Rolfes. 

Last season Tapsoba was a permanent feature for Xabi Alonso’s side appearing 47 times in all competitions for the Werkself. The 24-year-old would only miss one game throughout the whole of last term, helping resurrect a side that appeared to be faltering before the arrival of the Spanish head coach.

With three years left on Taposba’s deal at the BayArena, Leverkusen are in no need to sell and Rolfes wasted little time in emphasising this: “Eddy still has a long contract and therefore there is no reason for us to think about it at all. That’s not an issue.” There is also no financial reason for Leverkusen to part ways with their star centre-back, especially after the sale of Moussa Diaby to Aston Villa. 

Therefore, a positive summer transfer window for Leverkusen has put them in an extraordinary position to kick on next season. With Xabi Alonso proving to be one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting coaches, Die Werkself could be a dark horse going into next season.
