Tottenham Hotspur ‘have to test the water’ for Leicester City’s James Maddison over the coming months, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Maddison has been linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium for a while now and is about to enter the final 18 months of his current £110,000-per-week contract.

What is the latest news involving Maddison?

Paul O’Keefe, who is an FA Registered Intermediary, previously claimed over the summer that Tottenham were ‘very seriously considering’ making a move for Maddison.

However, it was actually fellow Premier League outfit Newcastle United who saw two bids rejected by Leicester for the one-cap England international.

The Magpies’ second offer totalled £50 million including add-ons, but it fell short of the Foxes’ £60m valuation, resulting in Maddison staying put.

Yet the speculation surrounding the attacking midfielder’s future has refused to die down thanks to his outstanding form, and the race for his signature could be one of the main talking points over the next couple of transfer windows.

What has Jones said about Maddison?

Jones believes that if Maddison, who has been labelled ‘frightening’, is available then Tottenham have to try their luck as he is ‘very ambitious’ and wants to take the ‘next step’ in his promising career sooner rather than later.

He told GiveMeSport: “If it does look like Maddison’s available, or even tempted to make a transfer, I think you have to test the water at this stage.

“You hear him give interviews at the moment, and he is very ambitious, and he’s very driven, and he really believes in himself. And he obviously does want to take that next step in the reasonably near future.”

Where would Maddison fit in at Tottenham?

Conte has often preferred to line up in a 3-4-3 formation during his time at Spurs, opting not to field a natural playmaker in his preferred setup.

But the Italian tactician could already have a plan in mind for Maddison if he eventually makes the switch to north London.

Conte switched to a 3-5-2 setup in the early stages of his title-winning campaign with Inter Milan, allowing Christian Eriksen to dictate the play through the middle, and a similar tactic could be deployed for Maddison.

A return of six goals and four assists in 12 Premier League appearances this season showcases the quality that Maddison would bring to Tottenham and making tactical changes to accommodate him may well be worth the risk.
