Three things we learned from Spain’s 7-0 win over Costa Rica

Spain defeated Costa Rica 7-0 in a perfect opening-day performance in Group E. We take a look at three things we have learned from La Roja’s emphatic World Cup win.

1 | Luis Enrique not afraid to drop Álvaro Morata

Álvaro Morata, normally Spain’s first-choice number nine, started the game on the bench, but eventually came on and scored with a nice left-footed strike after a one-two with Dani Olmo.

2 | Rodri in defence

Manchester City player Rodri started at centre-back. Rodri was selected in the deeper central defensive role alongside Aymeric Laporte and ahead of Pau Torres and Eric García, who were left on the bench. Spain’s clean sheet means Luis Enrique could choose the same back four for the next game in Group E against Germany, who lost to Japan earlier today.

3 | Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio and Ferran Torres in attack

Luis Enrique was criticised for selecting Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio and Ferran Torres in attack prior to Wednesday’s match. All three players scored on the night in a very impressive performance. Olmo opened the scoring and Asensio got in on the act before Torres scored a brace, including a goal from the penalty spot.

Ansu Fati could also be set for a start in the forward line as the tournament progresses. It remains to be seen if the Spanish head coach selects the same three forwards for the tricky test against Germany on November 27.
