Union Berlin have this morning confirmed that head coach Urs Fischer, central-defender Timo Baumgartl and midfielder Tim Maciejewski have tested positive for Covid-19. All other tests returned a negative result.
The news comes ahead of Union’s UEFA Europa League clash against Swedish side Malmö FF on Thursday evening. As reported by Kicker, Fischer is likely to be represented by assistant coaches Markus Hoffmann and Sebastian Bönig whilst Baumgartl wasn’t named in Union’s squad for the Europa League anyway.
Maciejewski was in the squad for Union’s defeat against Braga this season but was unused. For Baumgartl, he’s likely to miss Union’s Bundesliga game against Stuttgart on Sunday. The 26-year-old played for VfB between 2011 and 2019.
After eight games, Fischer’s Union Berlin are top of the Bundesliga with 17 points, losing to only Eintracht Frankfurt this season. They’re joined by Christian Streich’s Freiburg and two points behind the joint leaders is Bayern Munich.
