Thomas Tuchel’s Response to Gareth Southgate Euro 2024 Question has Fans Buzzing

England’s Thomas Tuchel have their eyes set on silverware – most notably, the 2026 World Cup – which is something that Gareth Southgate failed to do throughout his eight-year stay – and the German tactician has detailed what went wrong for his predecessor at Euro 2024.

And his well-thought response, as expected, has the Wembley Stadium faithful thrilled for the era under Tuchel’s watchful eye, especially at the prospect of ending their 59-year trophy drought and lifting silverware in north America next summer.

Tuchel made waves with his maiden squad. Dan Burn and Myles Lewis-Skelly were handed first call-ups, while Jordan Henderson’s shock inclusion caused misery among the English media given that Conor Gallagher and Elliot Anderson were left out.

Tuchel has named his maiden squad in charge of England – but there are a few notable omissions including Morgan Gibbs-White.

Tuchel, widely regarded as one of the best managers in world football, recently sat down with ITV Sport and spared no blushes when answering whether Southgate’s England had a ‘clear playing style’ while competing at Euro 2024 last summer.

“Yes or no: did England have a clear playing style last summer?” the German, was asked. “Not last summer, no.” he duly replied. When asked what was missing, the ex-Chelsea custodian said: “The identity, the clarity, the rhythm, the repetition of patterns.

The freedom of players, the expression of players, the hunger. They were more afraid to drop out of the tournament, in my observation, than having the excitement and hunger to win it.

After Tuchel’s pack-a-punch response, he was then asked about the missing piece. “Excitement.” he said, a response that offered the simple follow-up question of, “How do you mean?”

The view that people feel that’s the team to beat. That we arrive with a group to beat. That we know already, when we arrive and once we’ve qualified [for the 2026 World Cup], that everyone knows this is the team to beat.

And England aficionados, after watching the awe-inspiring footage on X (formerly Twitter), are struggling to contain their utter excitement about having such a well-spoken tactician in charge of the likes of Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Declan Rice.

Referencing his Champions League-winning campaign in 2020/21 with Chelsea, one supporter wrote: “These remind me of his quotes when he joined Chelsea. Big statements but he stood on business and delivered big trophies.”

Labelling Tuchel, who began his managerial career at Mainz in 2009, as a ‘serious manager’, another fan insisted that he’s looking forward to the prospect of sitting down and watching England – something that has become something of a chore for fans in recent years.

He’s a serious manager. Looking forward to watching England play for once.

Refreshing is the wording that one fan used to describe Tuchel’s approach. “So refreshing. Been crying out for a manager who actually has the bravery to let them play with freedom and get the best out of what is a very talented group. World Cup can’t come soon enough.”

“If this interview doesn’t fill you with optimism and excitement, I don’t know what will.” a third added ahead of England’s duo of World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia, both of which are being held at the Home of Football, Wembley Stadium.
