As reported by Sport Bild, Thomas Müller is set to sign a contract extension with Bayern Munich before Christmas.
There had been recent speculation that a new deal for the 34-year-old was not a guarantee, and a possible exit from Bavaria was on the cards. With previous interest from Premier League side Manchester United, it was understood that if Müller was to leave Bayern, then he would elect to sign for a side competing in the Champions League.
However, after Der Rekordmeister’s 1-0 victory at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening, Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, made it clear how important Müller was to the club: “There is no one who has internalised FC Bayern like that. We know what we have in him.”
Despite talks between the record champions and Müller not picking up pace in recent weeks, the two parties have recently shown signs of wanting to continue the relationship together. This was also something that Freund would suggest after the final whistle in Manchester: “It’s a special situation for Thomas, but we are in good communication. He behaves extremely professionally towards the team.”
For Bayern, while the 34-year-old may not be receiving consistent minutes on the pitch, he is still a vital member of the squad. With the experience and quality he can bring to the young players coming through at the club, as well as contributing positively during his fleeting appearances coming off the bench, as seen on Tuesday evening, signing Müller to an extended deal is a must for the Rekordmeister.
