Royal Portrush proved a true test once again as The Open returned to Northern Ireland, with shifting winds, punishing rough, and a final round providing all the drama fans have come to expect from golf’s oldest Major.
The leaderboard was packed heading into Sunday, with several players eyeing a life-changing victory and the historic Claret Jug. Among them was China’s Haotong Li, who had pieced together three composed rounds to put himself in contention heading into the final day. But as pressure mounted, his play off the tee cooled.
A one-under final round saw him slip down the standings, eventually finishing in a tie for fourth alongside 2023 and 2022 US Open champions Wyndham Clark and Matthew Fitzpatrick. The trio walked away with $730,667 (£586,000) each, no small consolation, but short of what could have been.
As Li faded, American consistency rose to the occasion. Chris Gotterup, a name fast becoming more familiar to casual fans, held steady to take third and collect a payday of $1.12 million (£900,000). Just ahead of him, Harris English mounted a Sunday charge, carding a final round of 66 to lock up second place and take home $1.75 million (£1.41 million).
Scottie Scheffler Wins The Open 2025 in Convincing Fashion
The American took home his fourth Major
But at the top of the pile, it was a familiar figure who pulled clear. Scottie Scheffler played with the poise and precision of a man used to leading on Sundays. He led by as many as seven shots during the final round and cruised to a four-shot victory to claim the Claret Jug and pocket a $3.1 million (£2.49 million) winner’s prize.
It marks Scheffler’s second Major win of the 2025 season, having already triumphed at the PGA Championship back in May. With just the US Open left to conquer, he’s now within touching distance of becoming only the seventh player in history to complete a Career Grand Slam, a feat that would place him alongside legends like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and newest member Rory McIlroy, who ended his 11-year wait to win the remaining Masters title in April.

In total, the Open Championship purse hit $17 million (£13.65 million), further proof of how the modern game continues to reward its best players. On a course that demanded excellence in every department, Scheffler rose above the rest, not just the best player this week, but one who continues to strengthen his claim as the standout golfer of his era.
At only 29, it could only be a matter of time before we’re talking about Scheffler in the same way as some of the all-time greats.
