Southampton could now ‘become an option’ for £25m World Cup star

Southampton ‘could still become an option’ for Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos despite his impressive performance at the World Cup, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Estádio da Luz in recent months and St Mary’s has been touted as a potential landing spot for him.

Southampton transfer news – Goncalo Ramos

Back in August, The Telegraph revealed that Southampton had entered the race to sign Ramos alongside Premier League pair Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United.

However, The Sun has since claimed that Manchester United are contemplating a £25 million offer for the Portugal international in the upcoming winter transfer window despite the fact he has a £100m release clause written into his contract.

And Ramos’ hat-trick in his nation’s World Cup last 16 demolition of Switzerland may have made him an even more appealing prospect to the Red Devils.

Southampton are currently lingering in 19th position in the Premier League standings and convincing one of Europe’s most promising talents to join a relegation battle may prove to be a difficult task.

What has Jones said about Goncalo Ramos?

Jones has informed GiveMeSport that he doesn’t believe a switch to Southampton is ‘impossible’ for Ramos and that Portugal’s exit from the World Cup could work in their favour.

He said: “I’m not sure they actually are, I think they could still become an option if he does actually leave.

“I think the hat-trick obviously put him on the map, but the fact that there was no follow up on that, the fact he is now out of the tournament, it means there’s no further profile boost for him.

“And that probably helps clubs of that level because if he’d done it again, and suddenly he’s escalated and just kind of passed you by. But I’m not convinced that that’s impossible.”

Is Ramos still within Southampton’s reach?

In 2021/22, Ramos registered eight goals and four assists in 46 appearances across all competitions with around half of his outings coming off the substitute’s bench.

And the 6 foot 1 ace has elevated his game to new heights this time around, finding the back of the net on 14 occasions in 21 outings, setting up a further six strikes for his teammates.

As per FBref, Ramos has also ranked in the 98th percentile for non-penalty expected goals, 91st for touches in the attacking penalty area, and 84th for total shots among his positional peers over the last year.

These figures potentially put Ramos out of Southampton’s reach in their current predicament, yet it remains to be seen if a European heavyweight is willing to roll the dice on him.
