Slovak midfielder joins Bochum on a free

VfL Bochum confirmed that Slovak international Matúš Bero had joined the club on a two-year-deal Tuesday afternoon. 

One of VfL Bochum head-coach Thomas Letsch’s former players will be joining his old gaffer over on the Castroper Straße. Twenty-seven-year-old Slovak midfielder Matúš Bero heads to the Revierklub on a free transfer from Letsch’s former club of Vitesse Arnhem in Holland. The 28-times-capped international play as both a six and and an eight in midfield. 

Bero served as the Erdevisie squad’s captain during Letsch’s tenure. In his five years in the Netherlands, Bero netted 26 goals across all competitions. He is known for having a reputation as an active box-to-box midfielder and will likely be utilized as an eight by Letsch. 

“Matus Bero combines many things that will help our team: an internationally experienced player who has his qualities between the penalty areas and looks for the finish himself,” acting Bochum sporting director Marc Lettau noted in a statement, “Thomas Letsch knows about his qualities, which Matus Bero has also already proven as a leader.”

“It’s an incredible feeling to now move to Bochum and the Bundesliga,” the player himself added, “For me, it’s the next level in my career. I’m happy and proud at the same time that such a traditional club like VfL Bochum is interested in me and my skills. I can’t wait to get to know the team and especially the stadium.”
