On Thursday, Nico Schulz was back on the pitch playing with the U23s in a friendly against Go Ahead Eagles. Per the ‘Ruhr Nachrichten’, it’s likely that the 29-year-old will be joining this squad for the foreseeable future without any chance of returning to Dortmund’s first team.
Schulz was given this opportunity in the 3. Liga after a conversation with Edin Terzic. A meeting with Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl is also scheduled to discuss the defender’s future.
With several left-backs preferred to Schulz on the depth chart, he was expected to leave the club this summer. However, after Schulz received domestic violence accusations, BVB struggled to find a buyer. Now, he is completely out of the first team picture and desperate for game time to prove himself once again for a potential winter move.
Schulz has a contract that expires in 2024.
