Austrian international Romano Schmid has extended his current contract with SV Werder Bremen. The duration of the 23-year-old’s new contract with the Hanseaten was not disclosed, but one assumes that the north German club opted to reward Schmid for his play with a lucrative new deal. The seven-times-capped ÖFB representatvie has become a regular in attacking midfield at Werder for quite some time.
Schmid has started all 15 competitive matches for Ole Werner’s side this season. Since 2020, Schmid has made a total of 103 competitive appearances for SVW. He’s scored 6 goals and registered 15 assists for the club in both the top flight and second division. In a statement accompanying the news, SV licensing head Clemens Fritz made clear that the aim was to tie Schmid down amid interest from other clubs.
“Romano has developed very well with us in recent years,” Fritz noted, “During his time at Werder, he celebrated his debut as a senior Austrian international and we are convinced that he has not yet reached the pinnacle of his development. Romano’s qualities also put him on the radar of other clubs.”
“My family and I feel very much at home in Bremen,” Schmid himself added, “In sporting terms, I am convinced that we are on the right path with the team. I am very excited about continuing to actively follow this path and helping to influence it on the pitch. I want to make my contribution.”
