The Champions League

Samir Nasri on Didier Deschamps: “I don’t like him as a person.”

Former French international midfielder Samir Nasri (35) gave a tell-all interview to the “Zack en roue libre” show on Monday night. The Premier League winner with Manchester City notably revealed he chose Arsenal over Lyon after his breakout Marseille years and shared his regrets regarding Arsenal’s Champions League runs. A large part of the interview is dedicated to Nasri’s troubled history with the France national team.

The Marseille-born playmaker only played 45 times with Les Bleus, scoring five goals in the process. Nasri has never featured in a World Cup for France. He was overlooked by Raymond Domenech in 2010 and by Didier Deschamps four years later. Nasri has revealed how much he was hurt to miss out on the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. “He screwed up my dream“, Nasri said about Deschamps. “Playing a World Cup in the country of football was my thing. I had a crazy good season. I thought I was going to Brazil to destroy the World Cup. I believed it. We were crowned champions [with Manchester City] and I scored in the League Cup final. When you see the names of the players called up, I blew a fuse. I thought he is taking the piss with me.”

Nasri has revealed that he and Deschamps are no longer on speaking terms. The former Arsenal player has revealed he came across the 1998 and 2018 World Cup winner in a Dubai restaurant, without exchanging words. “I can only wish him the best, but I don’t care. He’s not my friend and I won’t say hi to him because I don’t like him as a person.”
