After surviving the sack following a torrid 2024/25 campaign which culminated in losing the Europa League final to Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur, Ruben Amorim has led Manchester United to a hodgepodge start to the current campaign. The Portuguese retains faith in his group and insiders have insisted that he believes one of his players can become the best in the world in his position.
Last season, Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag and entered the dugout in November 2024 after Ruud van Nistelrooy’s four-game tenureship – and he led the Red Devils, 20-time champions of England, to their worst-ever finish in the Premier League. They concluded 2025/26 in 15th, behind West Ham United and Everton, on 42 points.
But who does the Old Trafford chief believe could become one of the best players in his position? United’s squad building since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became a minority stakeholder in February 2024 has focused on attracting youth and Premier League-proven stars, and his squad is much, much stronger than what Ten Hag contended with.
Somehow, over the years, United have fought off competition from Real Madrid to sign Leny Yoro, Patrick Dorgu was signed from Lecce and Ayden Heaven was lured away from Arsenal alongside Chido Obi. Elsewhere, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha – signed from Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers, respectively – arrived.
Amorim Believes Man Utd Player Can Become ‘Best in the World’
The club’s midfield problem may remain unresolved as Amorim embarks on his first full season at the helm, but he and his entourage did manage to improve their goalkeeping situation. The out-of-favour Andre Onana was loaned out to Turkish side Trabzonspor and Altay Bayindir was struggling to assert himself as the club’s go-to No.1. Senne Lammens, 23, was brought in.
Although there were reports that Amorim favoured a transfer for Aston Villa and Argentina shot stopper Emiliano Martinez, it was Lammens moved from Royal Antwerp in a Deadline Day deal worth £18 million.
Following his arrival, the uncapped Belgium international remained on the bench – but his debut for the English juggernauts against Sunderland last Sunday, and his performance assured the Old Trafford faithful as he earned Amorim’s men their first clean sheet of the 2025/26 season.
“Are you Schmeichel in disguise?” sung the home contingent (watch below) as he made a handful of claims and saves. He may have had a quiet day at the office, but his minimal involvement still excited those of a United persuasion.
According to a report from The Sun, club insiders have claimed that Amorim, widely regarded as one of the best young managers in world football, holds the young Belgian in high regard. In fact, it’s been stated that he’s handled his introduction into proceedings with ‘an almost paternal care’.
Viewed as United’s answer to none other than Thibaut Courtois by Amorim, the Portuguese head coach is of the belief that he has the combination of talent and dedication to become the best in the world by 2028, which is also the year that United boardroom bosses aim to win the league by.
On Courtois, it is believed the Real Madrid’s glovesman is acting somewhat as a mentor as he adapts to life at a club under intense scrutiny. Having played for Chelsea on 154 occasions, the 33-year-old is accustomed to the pressure, and he’s hoping to guide his compatriot to future greatness through his mentorship.
Earlier this week, journalist Peter Hall confirmed that Lammens had been impressing Old Trafford staff members behind the scenes with how he has adapted to life in England’s top flight, citing the fact that he is undergoing extra sessions to improve and develop his talent.
On the youngster’s start to life between the sticks, Amorim said: “It’s so important in the Premier League keeping clean sheets, you have chances to score and then to keep the clean sheet in the second half was so important. He was solid, when we were under pressure, the option was Ben [Sesko] and we weorked off that.
“Buzzing for him, everyone was around him today, it can be tough making your first start we want to be togather and I felt that today so we keep moving forward.”
