Bryson DeChambeau’s claim that newly-crowned Masters champion Rory McIlroy wasn’t feeling talkative during the final round of the Masters on Sunday has been disputed. The Northern Irishman was partnered with two-time major winner DeChambeau and ahead of the final round it looked as if it could be a showdown between the two for the green jacket.
However, it was the LIV star’s iron play that let him down, as he found the front bunker on the 7th, the water on the 11th, and missed left on the 17th, finishing with a lacklustre 75 to tie for fifth. England’s Justin Rose ended up being the greatest threat to McIlroy’s dream of winning the tournament to secure a career Grand Slam.
After an astonishing final-round 66 that included ten birdies, Rose stormed to the top of the leaderboard to face McIlroy in a sudden-death play-off which saw Rory sink a three-foot putt to end his decade-long Major drought. Despite playing together at Augusta National all day, when asked how McIlroy was feeling about his historic victory, DeChambeau said he had “no idea”, claiming: “I didn’t talk to him once all day. He wouldn’t talk to me.”

Fan Dismisses Idea That McIlroy Blanked DeChambeau During Masters Final Round
Their exchange was brief – but was witnessed by a number of viewers
While it is understandable that the pair might not have been in deep conversation as they competed for Masters glory, the idea that McIlroy hadn’t acknowledged Bryson at all quickly attracted attention around the world – and one eagle-eyed fan pointed out that he had actually seen Rory speaking to his rival. The individual even revealed what had been said.
“Rory literally walked up to him on the first tee, said something to the effect of ‘let’s have a good day, play well’. Heard it on the broadcast!”
Another user backed-up the above version of events, confirming: “I saw Rory shake his hand and give him a pat on the shoulder on first tee. It’s not the round for chit-chat.”
Although things seemingly weren’t quite as frosty as was first indicated, McIlroy and DeChambeau were never likely to be the best of friends on their way round the course. Last June, DeChambeau pipped McIlroy to the US Open title at Pinehurst, capitalising as Rory missed two short putts in the final three holes. The LIV star received the silent treatment that day too, as McIlroy left the course without speaking to anyone. It wouldn’t have been unrealistic for Bryson to return the favour.

Despite the alleged lack of conversation, DeChambeau admitted he felt for McIlroy during the dramatic final round at the Masters, which saw the eventual champion battle back from two double-bogeys late on.
“I wanted to cry for him,” he said. “I mean, as a professional, you just know to hit it in the middle of the green, and I can’t believe he went for it, or must have just flared it. I’ve hit bad shots in my career, too, and it happens. When you’re trying to win a Major, especially out here, Sunday of Augusta, the Masters, you have to just do it and get the job done and do it right. There were times where it looked like he had full control and at times when it was like, what’s going on? Kind of looked like one of my rounds, actually.”
DeChambeau will be hoping for better luck when he returns to Augusta for next year’s tournament. While finishing in a tie for fifth represents his best-ever Masters finish, he had looked on the verge of making a challenge for the Green Jacket, before falling away as his iron play and putting let him down at the worst possible time.
