Robbie Savage Subs Four Forest Green Rovers in First Minute vs Wolves

The reason behind Robbie Savage’s decision to make four substitutions after just one minute of Forest Green Rovers’ 3-2 win over Wolves’ academy side in the National League Cup on Tuesday night has now been revealed. Savage, who took charge of the non-league club in July, had already made seven changes to his starting XI from Saturday’s 1-1 draw with fellow promotion hopefuls Scunthorpe United.

But he baffled everyone by hauling off four of his starters – forward Tom Knowles, winger Kyle McAllister, left-back Neil Kengni, and centre-back Abraham Kanu – moments after kick-off (see below). At first glance, it looked a real head-scratcher, but Savage was in fact exploiting a little-known loophole.

Interestingly, Rochdale did something similar on the same night, substituting two players after one minute in their National League Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers. They, too, went on to win 3-2 – suggesting the 50-year-old may have a method to all the madness.

Savage would have changed his entire team if it weren’t for the competition’s strict rules, which is why he opted to make so many early substitutions to circumvent them. EFL teams are required to start at least four qualifying first-team outfield players – those who started the previous league game or meet appearance criteria. Starting them and immediately subbing them out allows clubs to avoid fines of up to £5,000 while still resting key players.

The result marked another impressive performance for the National League side, with the manager waxing lyrical about the team-selection headaches he now faces ahead of Forest Green’s away trip to Woking on Saturday. He said (watch his interview below):

“We’re going to have a tough time picking a squad for Saturday.”

Savage’s men extended their unbeaten start to the season, with goals from Jose Marquez, Isaac Moore, and Harry Cardwell securing the win over Wolves’ academy side. Forest Green currently sit second in the National League table, having claimed victory in six of their opening nine games.
