Six teams headed into the final matchday on Sunday knowing that they were in a vulnerable position, but only Real Valladolid suffered the unfortunate fate of relegation.
In a rare situation, Valladolid find themselves relegated whilst finishing on 40 points. It is the first time that a team has hit 40 points and still been relegated since the 2011-12 season, when Villarreal were relegated on 41 points.
The bottom half of La Liga was more competitive than ever before this season, as the difference in point totals between 13th-placed Celta Vigo and 19th-placed Espanyol was only six.
Valladolid headed into their final game against Getafe knowing that a win was necessary, but they could only manage a goalless draw. Getafe themselves were at risk of being relegated, but the draw took them to 42 points and a safe 15th-placed finish.
Real Valladolid are relegated in their first season back in La Liga, having been promoted from the Segunda División last season. They have been somewhat of a yoyo club over the last 10 years, and will be hoping for instant promotion back to La Liga next season.
