Real Sociedad vs Sevilla Preview

There should be a celebratory mood all round at the Reale Arena as Sevilla and Real Sociedad meet on the final weekend. Both sides will be in next season’s UEFA Champions League with La Real clinching qualification via the league last weekend while Sevilla won the Europa League for the seventh time in midweek to also qualify.
In terms of this game, Real Sociedad should be considerably the fresher team having had plenty of time to celebrate and recover this week. They did actually suffer a defeat last weekend, losing 2-1 against Atletico Madrid yet they still managed to secure a top four finish by virtue of Villarreal’s defeat in their game at Rayo.
The hard work had already been done in truth with an excellent run of form that saw La Real take 13 points from their previous 5 games which included fixtures against both Real Madrid and Barcelona. It’s the latest really significant achievement for Imanol who is writing his name further into club history. He’ll relish the chance to take Real Sociedad into the Champions League next season with the Basque side back in Europe’s premier competition for the first time in a decade.
As for Sevilla, it has been an extraordinary end to the season that culminated on Wednesday night with a penalty shootout win over Roma in Budapest. That made it Europa League win number seven for the Anadalusians, four more than any other club. Given the abysmal season they were having right up until José Luis Mendilibar’s appointment in March, it must go down as their most remarkable European success yet.
While they are still in with a shot at 7th place, that no longer really matters for Sevilla. They will be in the Champions League in 2023/24 against all the odds after the miserable way this campaign commenced. Relegation was still a serious threat when Mendilibar took charge but he has worked wonders with this side. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of team he names here but we expect some fresh legs to come in after what was a very intense and emotional midweek workout, most likely followed by a fair bit of partying.

Score Prediction
Of all the final day games, this one is arguably the least significant and it might just be the easiest one to predict. It’s hard to see Sevilla being in great shape physically for what would always have been a tough game and it’s likely we’ll see Real Sociedad close out the season with a home win, although some rotation is likely from them too with Asier Illarramendi set to start in what will be his final appearance for the club.
