RB Leipzig midfielder Tom Krauß agrees to join Mainz

As reported by Kicker, RB Leipzig midfielder Tom Krauß has agreed to join Mainz.

With an agreement in place between both the player and the club, the only obstacle in the way of completing the transfer is finding a suitable fee for the German under-21 international. It is believed that a figure of around €4m would be enough to allow Krauß a permanent exit from Saxony this summer.

It is slightly higher than the obligated fee Schalke would have paid had they remained a Bundesliga club after his season-long loan with Die Königsblauen last campaign. However, while Krauß will not be representing his boyhood club next season, a move to Mainz is ideal as he recently told Kicker: “The competition in Leipzig is enormous, but now I need an environment in which I can play as much as possible and receive support,”

It has overall been a disappointing season for the 22-year-old having faced relegation with Schalke before elimination in the group stages of the under-21 European Championship with Germany. Krauß featured 33 times for the Royal Blues last term scoring two goals from midfield.

Nevertheless, It is a transfer that would work for all parties, as Mainz are preparing for the possible departures of fellow midfielders Anton Stach and Leandro Barreiro, whose contracts expire in 2024. Also, for Mainz head coach Bo Svensson, Krauß is a product of the Leipzig academy which means he will fit in perfectly with the ‘Mainz DNA’.
