PSG’s Luis Enrique on Champions League: “When a club is obsessed with something, it’s never a good sign.”

Ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League opener against Borussia Dortmund, Luis Enrique addressed the club’s much-documented obsession with winning the elusive European competition. 

It is no secret that the Champions League is the holy grail in the eyes of PSG’s QSI owners. Whilst Les Parisiens have conquered France since the Qatari’s arrival, the Champions League has continued to elude them. They went close in the Covid-affected 2020 edition of the tournament, but a goal from one of their former players, Kingsley Coman, gave Bayern Munich a slender victory (1-0).

Enrique will be hoping to succeed where others failed, by bringing the Champions League to the Parc des Princes. His side are in a difficult group composed of Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle United and AC Milan. They start against the former at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night. Ahead of that match, Enrique said that “obsession” in the competition is a “bad sign.”

“When a club is obsessed with something, it is never a good sign. You have to have ambition but obsession doesn’t work, that’s the same in all walks of life. We want to play, to give our supporters a lot of joy, but there is no obsession,” said the Spanish manager in a press conference transcribed by RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins.
